Our History

Kullu Karishma’s story is one of perseverance, innovation, and collaboration, a tale of how a simple farm transformed into a hub for crafting exquisite wool products, enriching both the local heritage and the lives of those who encounter its unique creations.

1987: A New Beginning

In the year 1987, after resigning his post as a Scientist specializing in animal genetics with the government of India, our founder embarked on a new journey: Angora rabbit farming. The early years of his venture into this world were promising until the fateful year of 1989 when Angora wool stopped selling, leaving him at a crossroads.

1991: The Genesis of Kullu Karishma

With the Angora wool market in decline, he set out on a mission to add value to this material. That’s how Kullu Karishma was created, albeit unofficially. It simultaneously became a family business with a growing team mastering the art of spinning, weaving knitting and crocheting. Products were already thought for local markets and the influx of tourists who sought refuge in the cool mountains during the scorching summer months.

Kullu Karishma initial foray in 1991 saw us experimenting with an industrial approach, including machine-spun yarns, chemical dyes, machine knitting, and powerloom weaving. However, we quickly realized that this approach lacked control and innovation. Furthermore, we found ourselves competing with well-established industrial giants, a daunting challenge in the quaint town of Kullu.

1992-1993: The Evolution

It was in 1992 that we finally managed to get our act together. We began to define the unique products we would craft, using the local talent and knowledge of traditional craftsmanship. The culmination of our efforts came in 1993 when we showcased our creations at an exhibition organized by Dastkar, a non-governmental organization dedicated to helping craftspeople market their products in Delhi.

Our exhibition with Dastkar led to a series of changes in our products, styling, colors, and various other aspects. Our partnership with Dastkar has been a driving force behind Kullu Karishma’s success, as a platform showcasing our new products and connecting us with buyers both in India and abroad.

1996: The Formal Birth of Kullu Karishma

In 1996, Kullu Karishma took a formal step forward by registering as an official entity. This was a pivotal moment in our journey, marking our commitment to preserving and advancing the rich traditions of wool craftsmanship in the Kullu region.

1996-2020: Kullu Karishma’s Growth and Diversification

From 1996 to 2019, Kullu Karishma experienced a period of extensive development, participating in fairs and establishing connections with new clients both at home and abroad. During this time, alongside producing its own clothing and accessory collections, Kullu Karishma began fulfilling orders for designers seeking premium-quality craftsmanship.

Collaborating with external designers, such as Emma from England, who introduced us to the art of designer spinning of yarn, also allowed our brand to produce a new range of products, enriching the diversity of our offerings.

2020-2022: Embracing Resilience During the COVID-19 episod

Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, marked by lockdowns impacting us for 3 months and suppliers from various countries, Kullu Karishma faced a slowdown in business activities. Despite these difficulties, we upheld our commitment to our employees, ensuring they received their wages and looking ahead to brighter days.
